The Movie Reviewing Process
At the bottom of each hentai movie review there are four categories that each have a grade assigned (from A to F, you know, like in school. Ever wonder what happened to “E”? hmmm…). Each category’s grade indicates how well the movie scored in that particular category. The movie’s overall grade is basically the average grade of these four categories. Below is a little information on what I look for in these four categories to arrive at my final review scores:
Art & Animation
There are a number of things that I take into account when evaluating the animation. I judge the quality of the art, which is mostly technical stuff like correct proportions and perspectives, pleasing colors and composition, and good frame rate (a higher frame rate results in smoother animation). I also judge the artistic style and tone. This is less technical and more subjective so I try not to give it too much weight, I usually am just trying to decide if the the overall look and feel agrees with the subject matter and the creators accomplished the artistic vision they were trying to convey.
Story & Plot
A good story is one that sucks you in and won’t let you go, right up until the very end. You become invested in the characters, you identify with them and their circumstances, and you care about what happens to them. A good story also has a pleasant pace and an interesting delivery. Dialogue plays a part here, but dialogue is also a strong part of what defines the characters.
Characters
Here I’m mostly looking for characters that the viewer can care about. Its not much fun to watch a show where you don’t give a fuck about what happens to anyone. You need to be interested in the characters, and either like them or at least be interested in them enough to keep watching. Character design is a piece of this equation, but neither the coolest clothes nor the awesomest hair-do in the world will save a character from being boring or annoying.
Sound/Subs/Dubs
For sound, I pay attention to things like the soundtrack and the sound effects used, to make sure they fit the mood and what’s happening onscreen. Unfortunately, I only speak english. If a movie is subtitled, I check to make sure the subtitles are easy to understand and don’t contain too many spelling or grammatical errors. If a movie is dubbed, I listen to the voice actors to make sure they’re doing a decent job of acting. Overall, I’m probably pretty easy to please in the Sound/Subs/Dubs category unless something is really wrong.
