Katsuya Terada

Katsuya Terada

Incredibly talented illustrator and character designer Katsuya Terada was born on December 7, 1963 in the town of Tamano (Okayama). His detailed and technical yet softly organic art style has garnered him an international following that has led to work on such high profile projects such as the highly acclaimed anime film Blood: the Last Vampire, Nike’s White Dunk campaign, Playstation 2 video games, and Dark Horse’s upcoming BMW comic series, The Hire. Additionally, Terada’s rendering of Hellboy was used to make the popular Hellboy soft vinyl figure produced by Dark Horse.

Terada cites several influences on his unique east-meets-west style, in particular European artists such as Moebius. He defines himself as an artist of “rakugaki”, a practice of drawing anywhere, anytime, without reflecting too much. This style of drawing can be seen in his 1000 page collection of sketches Rakugaking.

Being the hopeless pervert I am, I am drawn to Katsuya Terada’s smuttier work. While I’ve never seen full on hardcore pieces that could be called “hentai” in the strictest sense, he does have some jaw-droppingly sexy ecchi anime art work that makes him one of my favorite artists ever. His unique style of faces (especially lips) is instantly recognizable and gives his girls undeniably strong allure and sex appeal. The work that best captures this naughty side of Katsuya Terada is his ultra-rare Cover Girls box set, of which I am the proud owner. :) And let me tell you, it is incredible and easily one of my most prized possessions. If you can’t find the elusive box set, then check out the Cover Girls Portfolio, which captures some of the best Katsuya Terada babes in high-quality hangable pictures. Also, be sure to click on the picture above of the pretty pirate girl with the creamy white breasts to see a gallery which features many of the gorgeous pinups of the Cover Girls that you’d give your left nut to fuck.

If you’d prefer a story to go along with your art, check out Rakuda Wa Warau, but beware… this graphic novel is fuckin violent! And if violence is what you’re into and don’t care about the sex, then Saiyukiden Daienou (Monkey King) might just be up your alley!

As you might have noticed, I don’t give artists actual numerical ratings. This is because they are PEOPLE. I don’t rate people, I only rate media like movies, web sites, and galleries. But I can say that if I were to rate individual pieces of artwork, I would give Katsuya Terada’s pirate girl painting a 10. Terada is an astounding artist who has mastered both concrete technique and also that ethereal unquantifiable quality that gives living, breathing soul and spirit to a painting.
