The opening scene of Hyakki: The Secret of Devil’s Island sets the tone very nicely with one of the more interesting bondage set-ups I’ve seen in a while. And so they begin exploring the island, reliving memories as well as having strange flashbacks. They make some shocking discoveries, leading to a mystery that slowly unravels in a deadly and twisted tale of slavery, domination, subjugation, and desire!

The sex scenes in Hyakki are quality, the more interesting scenes tend to be the ones like the opening one, where rebellious women fight for their dignity and freedom. Ryuichi turns out to be a ladies man, but he has a dark side too, binding and humiliating the girls and making them beg for pleasure to degrade them. Of course they love it and there is plenty of kinky hardcore uncensored sex to go around while murder and intrigue reach a feverish climax.

An interesting note about the dub/sub… its almost like watching two different movies by watching either the dub or the sub. The dub is an all-American remake and is not very faithful to the original Japanese dialogue at all. It is also fuckin hilarious! (Albeit intentionally or unintentionally is a bit unclear). The dialogue is simply wacky off-the-wall wild stuff. This gives the movie a light hearted comical edge that works most of the time. The subtitled version is much truer to the original dialogue and thus is a lot more serious, giving you much more drama and suspense if that’s what you’re looking for.

Shirow’s manga came to the attention of Harumichi Aoki, president of a publishing firm in Osaka called “Seishinsha”, who signed Shirow on to do his first commercial manga. And so Appleseed (1985) was released, instantly considered a masterpiece of cyber-punk, a genre of anime featuring futuristic societies where technology has run amok. In 1986, the same year Shirow released Dominion, Appleseed won the Galaxy Award for the best sci-fi comic. Shirow’s engineering degree shows through in Appleseed‘s designs and artwork, from the city-of-the-future landscapes to the hulking mecha with stylistic yet functional design. The latter part of the ’80′s saw him putting out follow-up volumes of the smash hit Appleseed as well as Black Magic M-66 (1987), the first anime movie based on Shirow’s works and the only anime film Shirow really played a direct role in the production of. In 1988 both Appleseed and Dominion: Tank Police were made into anime movies, but Shirow was not very involved.

In 1991 Shirow released the hyper-surreal Orion, which was overshadowed that same year by the release of what is perhaps his crowning achievement: The Ghost in the Shell (GitS) manga. GitS is his best-known work, and for good reason. Expertly balancing blistering action with philosophical concepts concerning the ethical ramifications of merging humanity and technology, GitS explored fresh territory with intelligence and imagination. GitS has been extremely popular in both the east and the west, and has gone on to inspire two full-length movies: Ghost in the Shell (1995), and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004). The sequel to the original manga, Ghost in the Shell 2: Man/Machine Interface, was released in 2001. Shirow’s GitS manga has also spawned the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2003) TV series that is currently in its second season, as well as various merchandise and even video games.

In my opinion, some of Shirow’s best work has been released in a series of four absolutely gorgeous full-color illustration artbooks under the title Intron Depot. These artbooks chronicle his foray into the world of CG (Computer Graphics) where he is pushes the medium to its limits and is consistently breaking new ground. The first book is mostly a sci-fi themed collection of his work from 1981 to 1991. Intron Depot 2: Blades (1998) is fantasy-themed, featuring sexy female characters with armor and swords and other bladed weapons. The third artbook was released in 2003, and as the name suggests Intron Depot 3: Ballistics is military-themed, complete with battle-ready anime babes with big guns. Intron Depot 4: Bullets (2004) collects his work between 1995 to 1999 and the subject matter mostly showcases Shirow’s designs for characters, mecha, and vehicle designs for video games.

Review:
As dark and gritty and horrific as hentai anime can get, Oni Tensei is absolutely not for the overly sensitive or weak stomached! This film is based on a very disturbing premise, and believe me, it only gets worse from there. But those who like their hentai hardcore with a capital HARDCORE will find this to be a classic demonic possession story uniquely interpreted like only Japanese anime protoculture can. I never reveal the plot in my reviews because I think that can ruin the movie for people who haven’t seen it yet, and a movie is so much more than a series of events, but I will say that the story is full of twists and surprises and will keep you completely enthralled.

Unrelenting in its bleak colors and droning soundtrack as well as in its subject matter, Oni Tensei is an extremely macabre and blood-drenched horror film… not to mention an uncensored XXX hentai monster rape romp! This is the part of the review where most critics would go on and on about how offensive the brutal rape scenes are and how the movie would be better without them… but this is Hentai Reviewer! Reviewing a movie like this and docking points because of the subject matter is like reviewing a heavy metal album and dinging it for rocking too hard. I personally understand that A) these movies do not condone rape, and B) movies are make believe, and so I can say that these are top notch rape scenes, even despite their complete and utter lack of tentacles! The animation during these sequences is very smooth, and there is lots of variety in shots and camera angles, rather than all those hentai movies that are content to just loop a few frames for what seems like ages. In fact, the overall quality of animation throughout the movie is excellent and on par with your average mainstream anime release.

Oni Tensei: The Demon Collection combines all four episodes from the series for the first time on one DVD and its much cheaper and easier to find than tracking them all down separately. Now, I’m not a snob when it comes to dubs vs subs. I will watch either, I don’t have much of a preference unless either the dub or the sub sucks. But in this case, unless you’re violently opposed to subs, I strongly suggest you avoid the dub. It really isn’t done well at all, the voices are cheesy, they don’t fit the mood and the movie loses a lot of impact. The DVD has both the dubbed version and subbed version and I’ve watched them both. This review is based on the subbed version, if you watch the dubbed version you should knock off a point or two from my overall rating, depending on how deaf you are.
