Yumisuke Kotoyoshi is more famous in the West for his work on Saber Marionette J (the manga) which has also spawned Saber Marionette J (the movie). While Saber Marionette is a gorgeous series with beautifully designed and rendered characters, the style is not really very similar to Yumisuke Kotoyoshi’s own style. Yumisuke was only a supporting artist for the series. Review:
The opening scene of Hyakki: The Secret of Devil’s Island sets the tone very nicely with one of the more interesting bondage set-ups I’ve seen in a while. A beautiful brunette stands tied up and quivering on her tip-toes, precariously positioned above a long black dildo pointed straight up to make its entry into her feminine folds should she lose her strength or her footing. A man emerges from the shadows, laughing evilly. The girl hisses “I’ll never be your slave!” and spits in his face! The threatening man then produces a stun gun and proceeds to shock the hell out of her as she screams and convulses uncontrollably! When he releases his finger from the trigger, her body can’t help but relax after being electrocuted, and the massive cock replica buries itself deep into her snatch as she falls onto it. We then visit a cruise ship where we meet our hero, Ryuichi, and his gang of friends. There is a colorful cast of co-Mystery-Cruisers who all have some pretty interesting hang-ups and history as well.

The ship reaches its destination, a mysterious island that looks like the site of a nuclear explosion, a dying island on whose soil no living thing grows. This is revealed to be the destination of the cruise, as well as the island that about half the travelers have lived on. And so they begin exploring the island, reliving memories as well as having strange flashbacks. They make some shocking discoveries, leading to a mystery that slowly unravels in a deadly and twisted tale of slavery, domination, subjugation, and desire!

The sex scenes in Hyakki are quality, the more interesting scenes tend to be the ones like the opening one, where rebellious women fight for their dignity and freedom. Ryuichi turns out to be a ladies man, but he has a dark side too, binding and humiliating the girls and making them beg for pleasure to degrade them. Of course they love it and there is plenty of kinky hardcore uncensored sex to go around while murder and intrigue reach a feverish climax.

An interesting note about the dub/sub… its almost like watching two different movies by watching either the dub or the sub. The dub is an all-American remake and is not very faithful to the original Japanese dialogue at all. It is also fuckin hilarious! (Albeit intentionally or unintentionally is a bit unclear). The dialogue is simply wacky off-the-wall wild stuff. This gives the movie a light hearted comical edge that works most of the time. The subtitled version is much truer to the original dialogue and thus is a lot more serious, giving you much more drama and suspense if that’s what you’re looking for.

Review:
WARNING: if you purchase the US Anime 18 release DVD, it only includes episodes 1 and 2! The DVD will end and leave you hanging because there is a 3rd episode but its not released in the US yet. The Anime 18 DVD packaging does not mention this at all, I had to find out the hard way. That’s why I’m lettin you know. Also because this means technically I am not reviewing Angel Blade in its entirety, I am only reviewing episodes 1 and 2 (until the 3rd is released, then I’ll review that one). Whew, now that we have that out of the way…

Angel Blade was directed by Masami Obari, who also directed more mainstream movies like Bastard!!, Battle Arena Toshinden, Bubblegum Crisis, Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture, Macross II, and Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer. Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer is one of my absolute all-time favorites, and it has a few things in common with Angel Blade… for instance both are in the fighting/fan-service genre and both are bursting with ultra-jiggly titties shaking like giant jello-cups of love! But of course Angel Blade hits the ball all the way out of the fan-service ballpark and into the hardcore parking lot.

The video is very nice quality, it has a high frame rate and very vivid colors. Angel Blade seems to have a bigger budget than most hentai movies out there, and for both the action scenes and the “action” scenes, it pays off. Whether the voluptous winged demoness Nailkaizer is delivering a flying kick to someone’s face or ramming one of her three (count them, THREE!) humongous cocks up somone’s oriface, the scene is smoothly animated with skilled detail and masterful execution.

That’s right, three cocks. And they conveniently sprout from her vagina, tucking back away neatly when they’re not needed. Yes, the character design in this show is awesomely creative. Thus triple-dick-girl Nailkaizer has been sent as a hench-man/woman by her evil overlord Dark Mother to put an end to Angel Blade’s troublesome meddling in their awful affairs. They believe they have tracked down Angel Blade’s location to be somewhere near a school, and investigate. Working with The Dean of the school, who also happens to be an evil henchman for Dark Mother, the forces of evil set out to discover the masked Angel Blade’s true identity, to crush her once and for all, and to brutally monster rape as many innocent anime babes as possible along the way!

But hey, I’m not here to spoil the story for ya, I’m here to convince you that you need to see this movie if you haven’t already! And if you’ve already seen it, then you already know how much ass it kicks.
